George Makinson

Oil Painting

Makinson may usually be found painting and helping the public in the cooperative gallery of which he is a founding member.

Born in British Columbia, Makinson has come to Virginia by an erratic progression through Canada, Newfoundland, Boston, Connecticut, New York City and New Jersey. For years before and after World War II he was an actor on radio, stage and television in New York and on tour.

A love affair of forty years with the Outer Banks 0f North Carolina led him to specialize in beach scenes. More recently he has directed his mostly self - taught painting skills toward the mountain and valleys of Virginia.

George is a familiar sight painting in the corner window of Artists in Cahoots at Main and Washington street. He works in what he calls "perfect light" there as he minds the store four or more days a week.

"I guess I'm one of the town sights," he says with a laugh.

"When I can feel something , I look over my shoulder and there will be about eight people standing out there on the sidewalk  watching me paint."...

Lexington may remember  that Makinson ran The Little Studio in Old Main Street Mall in 1981...

His paintings have been in local exhibits as well in galleries Roanoke and West Virginia.A seascape of his hangs in the Rockbridge Librery, and his work is in private collections from Hawaii to Germany...
