Established to provide an outlet for selected local artists and craftspeople, Artists in Cahoots is a member owned gallery–we are invested in its success. So when you visit you’ll find one or more of us ready to offer you assistance and talk about the many works on display.
Founded in 1982 in its original location in the current Sheridan Livery Building downtown, Artists in Cahoots was a very low key operation. Conceived of and originally managed by George Makinson (who did his painting in the shop for decades until his passing in 2010), a small handful of artists (including two current members) hung work in George’s small shop, shared in the store-keeping and kept their own proceeds, chipping in for expenses. Gradually, additional display was created and new members were incorporated until the space became inadequate.
Our Gallery now occupies the ground floor of the Alexander Withrow House (built in 1793) on the corner of Main and Washington Streets. With perfect timing, this prime space became available to us just as we outgrew our original space in 1988. As a group, we remodeled the shop completely ourselves, while adding display and counter space. With a group of creative and motivated people running our own business here, we are constantly evolving the presentation and systems to improve our offerings and service. |

Artists in Cahoots has maintained a successful dynamic where our decisions are made by the group at monthly meetings, new members and some consignment work are being incorporated all the time to keep us fresh and we constantly fine tune and improve our procedures and look. Though we have operated in this style somewhat informal for a successful business, the system runs smoothly and we all enjoy equal participation. Considering the length of our history and our volume of business, friction has been at a surprising minimum over these many years.
Our success during challenging economic times motivates us to continue striving to offer excellent locally made Art and Craft to our nearby and visiting clientele...and it is our pleasure to do so.
